Green Eco-friendly Services

Hainan Airlines always practices the philosophy of eco-friendly travel in-ground, cabin and online services by launching paperless services (including e-newspapers, e-invoices, online check-in systems, etc.), meals for bonus points redemption, onboard material recycling, recyclable, biodegradable and lower-carbon-emission material applications, etc.

Hainan Airlines' contributions to
green ecology conservation
★ Fuel consumption per ton-kilometer: about 0.30kg
★ Certified through energy system auditing for 10 consecutive years
★ Saving 95,000 tons of fuel per year, equivalent to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of about 299,000 tons
Fuel conservation and emission reduction
Carbon emissions in the aviation industry are mainly from carbon dioxide from fuel combustion.Based on the current practices, Hainan Airlines keeps improving fuel efficiency to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while cooperating with other airlines, airports, regulators, and other companies, exploring effective aircraft operation modes.

01 Improving fuel efficiency
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
For a long time, power sources and air conditioning power required for aircraft while waiting on the ground have been provided by aircraft auxiliary power units (APUs). However, as an aircraft fuel-based engine, an APU has many drawbacks such as high energy consumption, high noise, extensive pollution manifestations, and severe pollution. Therefore, controlling the use of APUs or using replacement facilities for APUs is an effective means to reduce environmental pollution.
Hainan Airlines uses ground power units (GPUs) in place of APUs. According to the principle of "use where possible" specified by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Hainan Airlines has entered into agreements on the use of bridge containing equipment with 44 airports except for objective reasons such as equipment failure, with utilization rate of APU replacement facilities of 100%.
  • Implementing the plan for residual fuel control
Hainan Airlines has identified 16 potential fuel-saving flight segments by analyzing the rationality of additional refueling. In 2023, fuel savings amounted to 10,368 tons under the residual oil control plan.

02 Innovative energy conservation technologies
  • Self-developed drinking water filling management system
In 2023, Hainan Airlines launched a drinking water filling control project and the industry's first self-developed management system to identify room for optimization in the drinking water filling standard through data analysis.Through optimization, water consumption can be reduced by over 227 liters per flight for the Boeing 787 aircraft type, resulting in annual total fuel savings of 136 tons. In 2023, the whole fleet saved 1,152 tons of fuel in total. The project will reduce the aircraft load, improve fuel conservation and emission reduction, and help save water resources.

      1152 tons of fuel
  • Optimizing route execution
In 2023, Hainan Airlines' routes were air passages with specific widths and altitudes designated by the CAAC in a unified manner. They were invisible "air highways" used for the safe and orderly flight of aircraft.By taking planned and temporary optimization measures such as straightening inherent flight routes and actively applying for direct routes during flight, not only flight distances, fuel consumption, flight times and carbon emissions have been reduced, but also great significance has been created in terms of ensuring smooth operations through traffic diversion, improving operational efficiency, etc.

      3865 tons of fuel
Extending paperless
services comprehensively
  1. Reducing
    1.23 million newspapers
  2. Reducing the consumption of
    3280 trees
  3. Saving fuel consumption by
    3.928 tons
  4. Reducing carbon dioxide emissions by
    12.519 tons
  • E-information
Since the start of the e-newspaper project, it has gone live on 80 Boeing 737 aircraft carrying the passenger cabin LAN platform. The passenger cabin "News Information" service now has access to digital media resources such as gmw.cn and hainan.xinhainews.cn. It is planned to introduce more mainstream Chinese and English news resources in 2024.The e-newspaper project aims to enrich passengers' air travel experiences, offer diversified cabin e-information, create a green passenger cabin, and extend the low-carbon and eco-friendly concept to passengers.During the digital media extension, Hainan Airlines has gradually reduced the distribution of paper newspapers on board.
  • E-invoices
To reduce the waste of paper and facilitate application and handling by passengers, it is expected that from April 2024, passengers can log into the Hainan Airlines app on a real-name basis to issue e-invoices for orders of secondary agency operations in a self-service manner. The business scope involved onboard upgrades and seat selection, ground upgrades and seat selection, on-site excess baggage, ground agency entitlements (VIP lounge, express check-in, VIP car, etc.), and pet boarding.
  • Electronic check-in
Passengers, especially family travelers, are encouraged to choose seats in advance; the presence of CUSS machines is being expanded, and passengers without baggage for check-in are guided to use self-service check-in equipment as a preferred choice.
  • E-documents
The handover process for paper documents is simplified to reduce the waste of paper and labor costs, such as canceling the aircraft commander handover form for passenger cabin pets. The transition from paper documents to e-documents is extended to reduce paper waste and make it convenient for passengers to handle procedures in advance. Business process management is optimized to expand paperless airports for special passengers and reduce the consumption of handover forms for special passengers.
